Dauphine Street House, New Orleans: USD 1,160,000 (GBP 773,300)
Kravitz Cool
The French Quarter of New Orleans is renowned for its colonial style, which makes the discovery of this Dauphine Street house all the more surprising. Beneath the weathered front of this cottage lies an open plan, loft style space which blends contemporary shabby chic with a dose of rockstar glam. The latter bears the design handwriting of Lenny Kravitz, who used to own the property and had renovated it extensively. The multi-talented musician is no stranger to the design world, having designed a number of products under his Kravitz Design business, notably for Kartell and CB2, and this house is a great showcase of his unique style.
What the agent says: "Glam meets old world charm in this 19th century French quarter Creole cottage. Modern renovation with artfully distressed exterior, open floor plan, exposed brick walls, black oak floor and ceiling, steel beaded curtains and Flavor Paper wall-covering. Lofty space features French imported spiral stair and horseshoe mezzanine bordered by Vieux Carre cast iron banister. 2 baths clad in Carrara slab-marble overlook lush courtyard. Master bath with 3 sinks, Japanese soaking tub, and rain shower. Open kitchen with 14 feet granite island."
What we love:
With a clever mix of vintage and contemporary in a glamourous industrial loft style, the character of this house is as assertive as Kravitz himself. We love the glossy black oak floorboards, grand crystal chandelier and the floor-to-ceiling curtains screening-off the upstairs gallery which, by the way, houses two open-plan sleeping areas that flow into each other. How rockstar is that??
What we would do:
We would have preferred to have more natural light in the main living space, but then with such a cool party vibe inside who needs an outside view?
