St John Street Loft, London EC1: £2,100,000
Lofty Dreams
At Do we love to salivate over a good loft or two. Whilst loft apartments around the Do HQ in Shoreditch and Clerkenwell are not hard to find, lofts of the quality like this one on St John Street are as rare as hen's teeth.
What the agent says:
"This architect-designed lateral loft, forms part of what is one of Clerkenwell’s landmark residential buildings. 190 St John Street was built in 1910 as the headquarters for the United Yeast Company by George Parker & Sons, builders of Peckham, and was converted into unique, loft style apartments in the late 90's."
What we love:
The spectacular lateral space, with over 2,000 glorious square feet all on one football-pitch-sized, horizon-stretching floor. Space of this magnitude needs a bold design gesture, which the raised open-walled bathroom more than satisfies.
What can be improved:
The space still looks pretty sparse - what's with the bed stuck in a corner and the living space bunched up against the dining / kitchen space? If we took over the drawing board there would be statement furniture on a grand scale spread out in distinct zones across the apartment to create a sense of space and intimacy.
