Banking on Acid
Further education is a good thing and today our lesson is on Chemistry. Did you know that oak contains high concentrations of tannic acid, which turns into dark blue when it is exposed to steel? Apparently the same happens with steel, as a result of a chemical reaction between red iron oxide and tannic acid. Well, Steven Banken, who graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2010, does and he has used this little-known chemical reaction to create a series of furniture showcasing the beautiful shades of colour which this process creates. We particularly like the chest of drawers / storage boxes which shows the deepening gradations of blue as the boxes get bigger. Perfect for sorting out your collection of jeans, perhaps.
