Best Mate in Milan

Room Mate Giulia Hotel by Patricia Urquiola

The words "designer boutique hotel" and "budget" may not seem to be natural bedfellows, especially when the said hotel is designed by Patricia Urquiola.  Spanish hotel chain Room Mate shows how it can be done with Giulia in Milan, the latest addition to their growing portfolio.

Giulia, by the way, is "curious, meticulous and exciting"; an expression of Room Mate's philosophy of creating hotels with personalities like your best friends.  Milan can certainly benefit from well designed and reasonably priced hotels and Giulia doesn't disappoint.  The 85 room hotel is housed in a 19th century building a designer handbag's throw away from the Duomo.  Inside the space bears all the hallmarks of Patricia Urquiola's touch, from the rich colour palette and layers of textures to furniture that is full of personality, much of it designed by Urquiola for Moroso, Cassina and other well known Italian brands.  Overall Giulia feels contemporary yet friendly, with a whiff of charming quirkiness.  Not sure this fits her personality profile, but we can't wait to get to know her better.

Product Inspiration

Patricia Urquiola's signature style combines slick contemporary shapes with rich colours and textures, as seen in the Gentry sofa, Mathilda chair and the Fishbone table, all for Moroso.

For slightly unusual lighting which oozes charm and style try the Cape suspension light from Moustache or the Flamingo brass plated table light from Ghidini 1961.

Simple and sculptural accessories such as the Spire wall hooks from Finell and the Treasure Table from Frederik Roije would look great in such a delightful space.
