Mass by Carson Davis Brown
Supermarket Art
The Mass project is an ingenious installation by photographer Carson Davis Brown, who takes items from supermarkets and other large stores and arrange them artfully in the middle of the aisles. He then takes images of the resulting installations, develops the prints in the in-store labs and then displays them surreptitiously in the empty photo frames on sale in the stores. All this is done stealthily without staff permission, in an exercise somewhere between guerilla art and pop-up gallery.
It is not clear whether this is meant to be a commentary on consumerism, a mockery of artistic collaborations with large corporations or just a bit of fun. Either way we love the images, which shows how bold and graphic compositions can be made from the most mundane raw materials. We just hope the staff appreciated the humour / artistry and didn't mind the clearing up.
