Dragon Calligraphy Furniture by Chulan Kwak
The Writing is on the Furniture
Traditional Chinese calligraphy is a revered art form which has long been celebrated in paintings, books and graphic design. We can now add furniture to this list thanks to Korean designer Chulan Kwak, who took inspiration from the swirling brushstrokes of master calligraphers to create spellbindingly sculptural furniture.
The Dragon chair and table are three-dimensional incarnations of abstract brushstrokes, rendered in stained plywood with metal tops. The complex form of the chair and table requires extensive use of 3D computer software as well as precision cutting and manipulation of bendable plywood to realise. The end result is not just a homage to Chinese calligraphy, but also to the creative ingenuity of the designer.

Product Inspiration
Make a design statement with outstanding shapes and unexpected forms, such as the Softer Than Steel bench from Desalto, the Bold chair from Moustache and the Multileg Showtime cabinet from BD Barcelona Design.
Lights in bold shapes work well as focal points in any room. Try the Swirl suspension light from LZF, the Lampscapes Downhill pendant light from Frederik Roije and the Dancing pendant from Menu.
Accessories with a sculptural presence is a great way to add interest to any design scheme. We like the Spire metal wall hooks from Finell, the Belle cake stand from Incipit and Rise & Shine wall mirror from New Works.
