SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort by Onion
Outdoor Living
The SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort has an enviable location on a prime stretch of the popular Chaweng beach on Koh Samui, one of the most visited tourist destinations in Thailand. So, when it opened a sister property across the road away from the seafront, it had to pull out all the stops to create an alternative attraction to the beach. The designers at Bangkok-based Onion did so by taking inspiration from the mature tropical trees on the site to create a tranquil oasis a world away from the hustle and bustle of the beach.
The hotel is structured around five courtyards designed to resemble different indoor spaces - living room, dining room, bedroom, playroom and stairwell. Lush green plants are combined with "rugs" made of pebbles, shelves of potted plants as well as outsized furniture and lighting to create inviting vignettes of domestic bliss lived outdoors.
The pièce de résistance is the spa, painted in a soothing shade of dark green with flashes of vibrant pink, in stark contrast to the sea of white across the other buildings. The circular entrance, reprising the circular motif used throughout the resort, creates a real sense of drama; as do the whimsical giant pink spheres, playfully squeezed between two high walls.
With such stunning outdoor spaces, who needs the beach?
