Bed-Stuy Townhouse by Olbos Studio
Cosmopolitan Colours
What do you get when a hip Brooklyn brownstone owned by a Singaporean-Hong Kong couple is renovated by an Italian architect? The result is a bright and bold design which speaks the cosmopolitan language of colour.
The journey of colour starts in the light and airy open plan first floor, where the wainscoting panels and window frames are painted in a calming shade of petrol blue. These are complemented by the blues, teals and greys of the sofa, dining table and dining chairs, an almost Nordic palette which radiates tranquility. Abstract patterns in the artworks and rugs punctuate the blocks of colour, whilst the fluorescent orange lights and bright yellow armchair add joyful pops of colour. The green terrazzo kitchen counter tops offer an interesting visual contrast, as do the red brick walls of the living room area. We also like the drum-shaped coffee table, its mirror surface reflecting the light and colours around it, as well as the black floor-to-ceiling shelving unit which cleverly disguises supporting columns. Who thought such a riot of colour could create such a sense of serenity?
