Island Life

Whistling Wind Island by akb Architects

As if having a log cabin is not idyllic enough, what about having a log cabin on your own private island? Granted, the island is only about an acre large, but in the hands of akb Architects this small but perfectly formed abode shows that size really doesn't matter.

Whistling Wind Island is a rocky outcrop located in Pointe au Baril, tucked away in a remote corner of Lake Huron in Canada. The home consists of a main cottage, a bunkie (that's a small guest cabin for those who don't speak Canadian), a sauna and a boathouse, connected to each other by wooden gangways. The cabins are simple and sleek, with asymmetric pitched roofs, cedar shingle cladded exteriors and large windows. External shutters protect the windows during the harsh winter months, whilst the weathered grey finish of the cladding helps the cabins to blend in with the landscape of rock, sea and sky.

Inside the cabins the walls are lined with bleached cedar panels, their horizontal lines subtly echoing the horizon. The furniture is welcoming and comfortable, mostly in a subdued, organic palette which gives off major Scandi vibes. We particularly like the cosy bunkie with its compact kitchen and integrated desk along one wall and two inviting sofas, set up in a conversational mode, in front of a stone-clad fireplace.

The cabin season in this part of the world finishes at around November when the lake starts to freeze over. But for a glorious few summer months, Whistling Wind Island presents the best of cabin life for both landlubbers and sea lovers alike.
