Sanya Sumei Tianya Coast Boutique Hotel by GS Design
Sky, Sea and Arches
The Chinese once believed that the tropical island of Hainan, the southernmost point of China, was the end of the world. Tourists have long flocked to the resort town of Sanya, perched at the southernmost tip of the island, not to see the world falling off the edge of the ocean, but to enjoy the tropical weather, miles of white sandy beaches and the vistas of endless sea and sky. Design aficionados now have an extra reason to visit, with the opening of the Sanya Sumei Tinya Coast Boutique Hotel, designed by GS Design.
The hotel is located on a scenic stretch of the beach, a pristine white building set against the dazzling blue sky and sea. Its facade is punctuated by elegant arched openings, said to be inspired by the waves of the sea. Indeed, the arch is featured throughout the hotel as a design motif, repeated endlessly to create a geometric pattern. Seen from inside the hotel, they frame the views perfectly and help to soften the edges of the building. Add to the mix a sleek roof terrace, a beach-front infinity pool and statement baths in the guest rooms and we have a hotel as luxurious as it is Instagrammable. The design and overall vibe is reminiscent of the Greek islands - you could be in Mykonos or Santorini, though guests who look for ouzo and grilled halloumi are likely to be disappointed.

Arch shapes work wonderfully well in lights. Try the Pyppe table light from Utu, the Chaindelier suspension light from Davide Groppi and the Liane suspension light from Blackbody.
For accessories, go for statement pieces in striking sculptural shapes, such as the Secant jug from Atelier Polyhedre, the Cobra Hexa vase from 101 Copenhagen and the Wall Mirror from Nomon.
