Barnstorming Design
Barn conversions rank high in many people's dream of country living and this remarkable conversion in Kent by architects Liddicoat & Goldhill reminds us why.
The building, once a threshing barn / dairy / stables complex, has been cleverly converted for contemporary living whilst retaining the original agri-industrial spirit of the space. The house is full of outstanding design features, including a barn-style door which slides open to reveal an enormous glass wall that pivots open by pulling an adapted lift chain mechanism. A whole side wall of the building has been replaced with an American aircraft hangar door, which folds open to create a canopy over the terrace area. A skylight runs along the full length of the roof, flooding the open plan interior space with light. A new mezzanine has been installed to accommodate the bedroom and bathroom spaces, accessed via a spectacular spiral staircase which winds its way around an original brick chimney in the middle of the living area.
This is a great example of how well contemporary industrial aesthetic can work in a rural setting.
