Hillside House by SB Architects
At One with Nature
Many houses promise green living but few live up to expectations; the Hillside House just outside San Francisco, designed by SB Architects, is a rare exception.
The four level house is designed sensitively to accommodate its steep hillside site and to maximise the views. The exterior of the house is clad in red cedar, which blends into the surrounding woodlands beautifully. The house was built using locally available and recyclable materials with sustainable production, including solar panels and passive heating / cooling, earning a rare LEED Platinum certification.
Every one of the three bedrooms and living / dining space has its own secluded terrace, including an outdoor shower and bathtub. The contemporary style decor inside is a rich melange of natural materials and textures, working in harmony to create a sumptuous and comfortable environment. An outstanding showcase of the natural style and sustainable design at its best.

Product Inspiration
The Smokestack outdoor fireplace from Frederik Roije is perfect for cosy evenings on your terrace or garden. The sleek and elegant Alieno chair from Casamania also looks wonderful outside. For a more quirky option try the Industry armchair, designed by Studio Job for Seletti.
Lights made from natural wood veneers is a lovely way to bring the outside in. Consider the Agatha suspension light and Chou table light, both from LZF.
The scrapwood series of wallpaper, designed by Piet Hein Eek for NLXL, is an easy and effective way to create a rustic wood panelling effect. The wonderful ceramic vessels from Sena Gu (such as the Tree Vase) are all inspired by nature but with a contemporary touch.
